Hello everyone, hope you all are doing well and preparing for your exams. I have the privilege of being the last person to start the blog and to wrap up the year. I know that we have all worked hard and learned a lot this semester. Only being a freshman, this class really helped me dive into my major. Several things have opened my eyes to what my major really holds. I’ve realized how important language is when it comes to deaf students.

On Tuesday, we will be participating in a discussion for our Deaf connections project. In all honesty, I’m very nervous to get up in front of the class and take the position of another person. At the same time, I’m very excited to see how everyone has a different perspective when it comes to their role. I think personally seeing the different perspectives and hearing the different backgrounds will be beneficial for when I have students of my own. I think this will help me take in the consideration of the background of each student. I want to be able to have those personal caring relationships with my students. With this all being said I’m curious to see what your feelings are behind this project? Are you nervous or excited? Do you feel like this is beneficial for your major?

  1. Hey Miranda!
I am a little nervous that I am going to sit on the panel and draw a blank. However, I did try to pick a perspective that I felt the closest to so that I could take on the perspective even more. I chose the perspective of a mother of a deaf daughter with a cochlear implant. I feel as though this is very beneficial for my major because I am a special education major and I will have to conduct IEP (individualized education plan) meetings with a variety of attendees such as parents, specialists, general education teachers, psychologists and anyone else deemed of importance in developing their education plan. I will have to conduct similar panels/meetings with my students support systems.

    1. Yes! This is it, Miranda! One of the major purposes is to give you the opportunity to see how your thinking has grown over the semester and how you can view the topics you have learned from a different perspective than your own. It is designed to help you see deaf education from a student's perspective or a parent's perspective or from that future teacher's perspective. The project gives you the opportunity to demonstrate the depth of your knowledge over several of the course objectives outlined in the syllabus. :-)

  2. To be honest, I did not understand the project. But, with a little help and rewording I think I finally got it. I am confident in what I have to present, but getting up and presenting it is a completely different story. I have a hard time getting in front of people, but other than that I think it will be fine.
Good luck to everyone and have a great summer!

  3. I am with abigayle.. didn't really understand the project. Hoping from the feedback I will understand exactly what I am doing. I'm confident enough to go up there and do my best, I don't really have stage fright unless I'm signing haha. Going to do my best!

  4. Your feedback is valuable and important to me. We spent an entire class to discuss and go over this final project. There have been several weeks since that. Could you help me understand how to better help students understand the project. What could I do better as an instructor to help you understand this project.

    1. Sorry Mrs. White just now seeing this. I was also confused with Abigayle and Collen. I thought I understood the assignment after we spent the class discussing it. However, the aspect I was confused about was that I thought the panels were going to have a variety of perspectives on them rather than most members having the same or very similar positions.
After completing the assignment I now understand the reasoning behind that and think that it worked very well but that was one major area of confusion for me when the panels were released.

  5. I would be lying if I said that I wasn't nervous. I think that these are good nerves though, especially when we are taking on someone ele's point of view. I have to put aside any personal stereotypes, whether they are known to me or not, and allow myself to become this other character. I think this assignment helped me look at the parents point of view and also ensures that I have done research on that. I am excited for to see what everyone else is going to present tomorrow!

  6. I am a little nervous as well, but I feel like this activity is a good opportunity to show what we've learned this semester. I personally chose to be the residential school teacher because I one day hope to work at KSD. Completing the project outline allowed me to reflect on how I felt a residential teacher would feel about the selected categories. I think the panel presentation will also allow us to see of these differnent roles would interect with one another in realistic situations.
