Megan's "Food for Thought"


Hey guys!

It’s finally my week to start a blog post, like Abigayle I was wondering when it would finally be my turn to start a blog post.  I have struggled all year long because I feel as though I had so many good ideas for different units, and now that it’s my turn I am coming up short on ideas to talk about!
I have a few questions that I wanted to ask.  What was your favorite part of Anita’s story/presentation?  What has been your favorite unit to learn about this semester? 

My favorite part of Anita’s presentation was her discussion on how she felt as though she didn’t fit into any of the categories of either Deaf, deaf, or D/deaf.  I loved her discussion on how she was never fully in one side or the other when it came to the hearing and the deaf “worlds”.  She was never completely deaf or she was never completely hearing – such as how she is deaf, but she thinks like a hearing person.  I feel as though this aspect of her presentation was very unique.  It was interesting to hear her story and the different identity struggles that she had.  I think that it really opened my mind into the variety of backgrounds that individuals who are DHH have, and how many of them are trying to figure out their identity and their hearing loss.
One of my favorite units that we have covered has been the modes of communication.  I discussed that last week with Abigayle’s post.  What has interested me the most is the wide range of communication modes that individuals who are DHH could use.  I had no idea what Pidgeon Signed English was, that there was anything like cued speech, or signed exact English.  Coming into this class I thought that the only communication options were ASL, speaking and listening, or a combination of these two.  It really opened my eyes to the variety of communication options there are for individuals who are DHH.

  1. My favorite part of Anita's speech was when she talked about her transitioning schools to find the right crowd and as she went along she finally found herself through this transition. It was really heart touching listening to her story and how she dealt with her deafness as she grew into adulthood.

    My favorite unit this semester is very difficult to think about because everything that I have learned has been my favorite. It is all new to me and it interests me to learn about how deaf and hard of hearing students develop in a education setting. Although I really liked when we were focusing on cognitive thinking that was really interesting to hear.

  2. My favorite thing about Anita's discussion was the whole thing overall. I just enjoyed learning more about her and her experiences.
    I do not really have a favorite unit, but I did really enjoy the KSD trip. I loved how they were teaching us signs and were so excited for the activities.

  3. I had to leave during Anita's presentation due to a sick kid. oh the joys of children. Other than that I did as well enjoy the modes of communication Megan. It was great to learn about the different modes as well as distinguish ASL and English.

  4. Overall, my favorite part of Anita’s personal story revolves around her explaining how she evolved from an individual who did not know her identity among others to one that has created her own. Despite the common labels, she overcame these and has set a standard for her daughters to fall in her footsteps. I loved hearing how open-minded she was when it came to both the hearing and deaf community. Her experiences on both sides of each culture have allowed her to respect the differences of others because this is how she believes all individuals should be. I agree. On another note, my favorite unit to learn this semester is probably the cognitive unit. Thinking about our own thinking has allowed me to explore my thoughts at a deeper level rather than scratching the surface. Along with this, I am able to understand why it is so important to help kids to do this as well and how it can affect them academically, socially, and emotionally later on!

  5. One of my favorite parts about Anita's presentation is due to the fact that she made it more of a story instead of a lecture. She placed a lot of personal problems that she faced growing up in a hearing school. She mentioned how she was not really accepted by both the hearing and deaf culture. I enjoyed the fact that she let us get to know her and her personality and then informed us about what her role is now within the deaf and hearing communities.

  6. My favorite part of Anita's speech was her talking about her personal life and family. It was nice to understand her on a deeper level than just her job. I also enjoyed listening to her story. Where she came from, where shes been and where she is now on her journey. I really enjoyed her being in class. My favorite unit so far has been the modes of communication. I learned a lot from this unit.

  7. My favorite part about Anita's visit was that she was so confident in everything she was saying. A lot of people wouldn't be able to stand up and talk about their own experiences like that. She really didn't care anymore about what other people had to say about it. I loved that she was able to tell us about how she felt when the deaf wouldn't accept her as she was along, and the hearing wouldn't either. ALSO, I loved Anita's poem.
    My favorite unit this far was definitely the myths and misconceptions unit because that was the first time my eyes were really opened up to the field. It made me want to inform others!

  8. My favorite part of Ms. Anita's presentation was talking about being cursive d "deaf". How she didn't fit in anywhere so she created her own place in the world.
    My favorite unit was what we learned for the KSD trip. The trip really gave me reassurance that I'm in the right major because I will love what I do.

    My favorite part of Ms. Anita's presentation is when she talked about being cursive d "deaf". I thought this part of her presentation was a very strong point of her story and found it very special, as well as inspirational. It made me extremely happy to see her tell us with pride, despite all the rude things people had said to her in the past.

    My favorite unit so far has been language acquisition and communication. This subject is directly related to my future career, so I was extremely interested in the concepts discussed. I was familiar with some, but mostly enjoyed learning about different modes of communication! I was not aware there were so many different options that could be used. I found that very fascinating.

  10. My favorite part of Anita's presentation was how confident in who she was. I understand that she has come a long way and has been through hardships but I see how those have payed out. I like how she shared her story because it gives me insight to what my future students may be going through. I found her presentation very inspiring. My favorite unit of this class would have to be the literacy unit because It will be very useful knowledge to have before getting deep into my major of DHH ,I didn't realize how big of a struggle it is for some students. My eyes were opened up to the reality of learning literacy.

  11. My favorite part of Anita's presentation was her analogy of the communication tool box. Anita questioned why as deaf educators we would not want to provide students with multiple modes of communication so that deaf students could express themselves in multiple situations. She also explained that maybe one of those tools is rusty and isn't perfect, but at least it gets the job done. In deaf education I someties feel as though students who do not learn ASL are looked down apon, when in reality the goal of deaf education is to provide students with the needs necessary to express their wants and needs and socialize with those areound them, because everyone has a right to have their "voice" heard.

  12. Ooops I forgot a part! My favorite unit so far is learning about family dynamics because prior to this class my greatest fear was not knowing how to connect with my future student's parents.

  13. I really enjoyed all of Ms. Anita’s presentation. I thought that she was hilarious! When she talked about her educational experience it blew my mind that she had minimal access to accommodations and/or resources. She talked about struggling to find her place because she wasn’t hearing but she lived a life similar of a hearing individual, but Deaf individuals did not consider her to be Deaf due to her being vocal. That lead her into talking about the Language Toolbox. She said something along the lines of “Why would we not want our children to have access to multiple resources? The worst thing that happens is they do not use it. It is better for a child to have the resources and not use them than to need the resources and not have them.” I could not agree any more with that statement.

    My favorite unit to learn about this semester would be the modes of communication. I was aware that Deaf students did not only learn and taught by ASL; However, I was not aware that there are so many modes that can be used to educate the Deaf. I learned a lot from this unit. It challenged me to think about different modes that I can become familiar with and implement into my classroom.

  14. One of my favorite points from Ms. Anita's presentation was when she was talking about how she did not care what others think of her, because she knew she did not have to have a label. I feel that this is something everyone can relate to. No matter what others say you get to decide what you are.
    Like i've said on the blog before, I have learned so much from this class, but one thing that I found extra interesting was all the different modes of communication that a deaf and hard of hearing individual can have. As well as exactly how much goes in to their learning ways and the different things that can make this more difficult than hearing students.

  15. I have learned so much from this class but I would say my favorite thing is learning about Deaf Plus and interpreters. Though I wasn't there for the interpreter class I did however enjoy Danielle's presentation on being DeafBlind and I love learning new things about that stuff. I love this class in general and have learned so much information I don't know how to keep it all straight but I did overall love learning about Deaf Plus.
